Product Description
The Ergo Baby Carrier Infant Insert allows you to carry your newborn in a more natural position with legs together - similar to the way the baby would be carried in a ring sling. This baby carrier accessory extends the life of the Ergo Baby carrier by allowing you to carry your newborn or toddler in the same carrrier. With the infant insert, you can more easily nurse your baby while on-the-go. A baby sling or baby wrap provides the best support for your newborn and with the addition of the Infant insert, your Ergo can also provide the support for the baby's developing spine. The infant insert is made from a 100% cotton poplin covering 100% cotton batting. The infant insert is typically used for newborns to 4 months. machine wash and dry on gentle cycles.

Summary: Some newborns just don't like the Ergo 2009-12-16
Comment: I bought the Ergo carrier and the infant insert to use with my daughter from birth, after hearing rave reviews of it. We needed a carrier with more support than the Bjorn or others, as my husband has back problems. The hip belt is a good solution -- it feels much like our packs for backpacking.

However much we like the carrier, though, my six-week-old daughter hates it. I've been trying to get her into the Ergo using the infant insert repeatedly ever since she was born, but with no success. The moment I put her (in the insert) into the Ergo carrier, she starts screaming and doesn't stop until I take her out. I've watched the video and am following their technique exactly, but still she just hates the carrier. (Note: don't read the instructions that come with the insert -- they're misleading -- watch the video instead.)

I've now tried both the old infant insert shown here and the new Heart 2 Heart insert, and neither one works for my daughter. Neither one provides enough head support for her, which is why I think she screams. The inserts themselves do come up around her head, but they're not stiff enough to support her, and the carrier itself doesn't come up high enough to add the needed support (and she's not particularly long for her age). The only solution is to cinch the carrier so tight that her head is forced against my chest and can't move in any direction, which she also hates.

I've done a bit of research now and it appears this isn't uncommon. Many newborns don't do well with the Ergo, but they take to it once they're 4 or 5 months old and can hold their heads up, at which point there's no need for the infant insert. The insert itself feels like a bit of an afterthought, in fact -- it seems like the carrier simply wasn't designed for newborns. Having the baby's feet out one side seems like a stopgap solution to compete with other carriers that are pitched to newborns. So it's worth knowing before buying this insert that it may or may not be money well spent -- it all just depends on whether your child likes it or not, so it might be worth waiting until after your baby is born and trying it out before buying it.

Summary: Didn't care for AT ALL 2009-11-11
Comment: My baby screamed every time I put him in this. I am going to wait until he's old enough to not need the infant insert to use my ERGO carrier because this thing was a nightmare. I watched countless videos on how to put your baby in it and even had a friend of mine who uses the ERGO with her infant show me, but neither me nor my baby was comfortable with this bulky insert.

Summary: Watch the DVD and you WILL have no problems... 2009-09-08
Comment: Just watch the DVD that came with the ERGO baby carrier and you should have no problems. Here's a breakdown of what I did.

1.) Put the ERGO carrier on but just the waist belt. DO NOT PUT ON THE SHOULDER STRAPS TILL LATER!!!

2.) I would swaddle my baby and than put her in the insert. Reason for this is once she fell asleep I can just lay her in the crib without waking her. One more thing...The top of my baby's head would be leveled with the top of the infant insert allowing her to have head support. She would pretty much look like a taco.

3.) Next I would pick her up and hold her head at my heart and her feet at my right side hip. Next you have to put the shoulder straps on while you hold your baby. After about 3 times I was able to complete my routine in about 30 sec.

4.) After she's in the carrier I would make little adjustments for comfort.

As you can see I did not have to hold my baby over my head like one of the reviewers stated. Not rocket science people just watches the DVD. Oh and my daughter was about 90th percentile in weight and high 80's in height.

Summary: Use a blanket or small towel instead 2009-07-08
Comment: As much as we love the Ergo Baby, this insert thing just frustrated us. It doesn't really fit very well and is hard to get in place. We watched the video over and over...

It's very floppy / flimsy and really doesn't provide any support for the babies head (which is why we thought it would be good to have)

We ended up using a lightweight fleece blanket about 2-1/2 foot square.

I don't think you need this.
